When someone dies in traumatic circumstances, or the death is sudden and unexpected such as the death of a child, grief can be mixed with trauma symptoms. This can lead to PTSD symptoms such as intrusive reliving of memories, nightmares, avoidance of all things associated with the trauma, emotional numbness, fear and anxiety. Anger may also be present. Trauma based treatments such as CBT and EMDR can be effective in treating the symptoms of traumatic grief.
